Retreived from Raincloud
Within a cloud, there is mist
In the mist, rain falls
A thousand lights shone from a thousand homes
Every drop of every trickle
Every second of every minute
Wings of silver fly to the sea
The series Retrieved from Raincloud came to life from this short poem, which I originally wrote in my first language, Chinese, on an international flight that took off from Yunnan (south of the clouds), China. In the shape of the Chinese characters, “cloud", “snow”, “fog”, and "light". Retrieved from Raincloud depicts human poetic moments in an increasingly fast-paced world.

1st in the series: Cloud
Material: Sterling silver, fine silver, smoky quartz, amethyst, mother of pearl, aquamarine, diamond, topaz, citrine.
The character “cloud” is a pictogram, which means it came from a pictorial description of the phenomenon. Cloud is a visual, jeweled dedication to the poem above. It reads: Within a cloud (smoky quartz), there is mist (smoky quartz and mother of pearl)/In the mist, rain falls (topaz, diamonds, and vertical filigree)/A thousand lights (diamonds, citrine) shone from a thousand homes/Every drop of every trickle (topaz connected to mother of pearl with a single silver wire)/Every second of every minute (two aquamarines joined by silver beams)/Wings of silver fly to the sea (dragonfly wing with topaz).
Material: Sterling silver, fine silver, smoky quartz, amethyst, mother of pearl, aquamarine, diamond, topaz, citrine.

2nd in the series: Snow
Material: Sterling silver, fine silver, black quartz, aquamarine, topaz.
The character “snow” has two parts, the upper half, “rain,” is a pictogram, and the lower half came from a pictorial description of snow. This piece is a tribute to the mood of winter, which comes sometimes in a blizzard (stranded silver wire), sometimes over a glacier (aquamarine); but snow is its motif. Delicate petals of ice (topaz) fall from a raincloud (black quartz), burying broken leaves and wings, awaiting the next season.

3rd in the series: Fog
Material: Sterling silver, fine silver, mabe pearl, diamond, topaz, moonstone, amethyst, synthetic alexandrite.
“Fog” is a radical-phonetic compound with two parts, where the pictograph “rain” implies this phenomenon is related to water, and beneath “rain” is a character with the same pronunciation as “fog.” This piece is dedicated to research on the visual and meaningful composition of complex Chinese characters.
